What is FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form filled out by current and future undergraduate and graduate college students in the United States to determine whether they are eligible for student financial aid.

The FAFSA was recently ranked No. 1 among the “most complex and convoluted higher education forms.” It can take upwards of 10+ hours to complete, and for the 2020-21 school year, roughly 1.7 million high school graduates who could have received financial support missed out because they didn’t file the form.
What makes applying all the more difficult is the 2020 FAFSA Simplification Act. While the new 2024-2025 FAFSA has fewer questions, the rules have changed making it harder for families with middle to upper-middle incomes to qualify to receive free money. Things like taking away credit for having more than one student in college at the same time; adding the value of a business and family farm; students with divorced or separated parents can have their reduced or eliminated entirely.
A lot of the loopholes have been closed, but new ones have been created. Parents must know how to use the new rules for their benefit.
