What is FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form filled out by future, current, and graduate college students in the United States to determine whether they are eligible for student financial aid.

The Problem I Not The FAFSA

The FAFSA used to be ranked No. 1 among the “most complex and convoluted higher education forms,” and it took several hours to complete.

Fortunately, that is no longer the case. A couple of years ago, after a disastrous launch, Federal Student Aid finally made the FAFSA easier and faster to apply.

So, other than knowing which parent will be a contributor and how to value your assets so you don’t lose out on free money, it shouldn’t take you more than an hour or so.

While the new 2026-2027 FAFSA has fewer questions, some rules have changed, making it harder for families with middle- to upper-middle-income levels to qualify for free money. Things like…

  • taking away credit for having multiple children in college at the same time
  • students with divorced or separated parents can have their aid reduced or eliminated.

Many loopholes have been closed, but new ones have been created. Parents must know how to use the new rules for their benefit.

To be awarded the most financial aid, you need to know how to master the FAFSA and CSS Profile.

But there’s a challenge…

  • For most parents, completing the FAFSA and CSS Profile correctly is hard to do on their own.
  • No one shows them how to do it right.
  • Parents only have one chance to get it right. If you get it wrong, you can miss out on tens of thousands of dollars.
  • Even if you are great with finances, financial aid is a different animal altogether.
  • Some families will have to complete as many as five forms for ONE college.
